Liposuction – Cannulas & Surgical Instruments

Procedure Overview

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure used to remove localized deposits of subcutaneous fat and improve body contour. It may be performed using conventional suction-assisted liposuction or techniques such as power-assisted, ultrasound-assisted, or laser-assisted liposuction, depending on the patient's needs and the surgeon's chosen approach.

Surgical Procedure

1. Preoperative Assessment: The patient undergoes a medical evaluation, and the treatment areas are assessed and marked. The surgical team prepares the appropriate liposuction instruments and equipment.
2. Anesthesia: Anesthesia is selected according to the extent of the procedure, the patient's health, and the planned technique.
3. Incision: Small incisions are made in discreet locations to allow access for the cannulas.
4. Tumescent Infiltration:When indicated, a tumescent solution is introduced into the treatment area to facilitate fat removal and help control bleeding.
5. Cannula Insertion: A suitable liposuction cannula is introduced through the incision.
6. Fat Removal: The cannula is moved through the subcutaneous tissue using the selected technique to remove targeted fat. Suction-assisted systems use negative pressure to collect the aspirated material.
7. Contour Assessment: The surgeon evaluates the treated areas for symmetry and overall contour.
8. Incision Management: Incisions may be left partially open or closed according to the operative plan to allow drainage when appropriate.
9. Compression and Recovery: Appropriate dressings and compression garments may be applied. The patient receives postoperative monitoring and recovery instructions.

 Liposuction Cannulas

Liposuction cannulas are specialized hollow instruments designed to aspirate subcutaneous fat.

Common Cannula Types

- **Standard suction cannulas:** Used for conventional suction-assisted fat removal.
- **Multiport cannulas:** Feature multiple openings for fat aspiration.
- **Mercedes-tip cannulas:** Have a multi-opening tip design used in selected fat-removal techniques.
- **Blunt-tip cannulas:** Designed to facilitate passage through soft tissue while limiting sharp-tip trauma.
- **Fine cannulas:** Used for more delicate contouring and selected small treatment areas.
- **Power-assisted liposuction cannulas:** Compatible with powered systems that provide reciprocating movement.
- **Ultrasound-assisted liposuction probes:** Used with compatible equipment to assist fat disruption.
- **Specialized contouring cannulas:** Selected according to the treatment area and intended result.

Cannula diameter, length, tip design, and port configuration vary by manufacturer and clinical application.

Common Liposuction Techniques

- **Suction-Assisted Liposuction (SAL):** Fat is removed using a cannula connected to a suction system.
- **Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL):** A powered handpiece assists cannula movement.
- **Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL):** Ultrasound energy is used to assist fat disruption before aspiration.
- **Laser-Assisted Liposuction:** Laser energy is used as part of a specialized fat-removal technique.

Each method requires compatible equipment and appropriate clinical training.

Postoperative Care
Postoperative care may include compression garments, wound care, pain management, activity guidance, and follow-up appointments. The patient should receive clear instructions about swelling, bruising, hydration, and signs of complications.

Potential Complications

Potential complications include bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, contour irregularities, changes in skin sensation, skin injury, fluid imbalance, and complications associated with anesthesia. Rare but serious complications can include fat embolism and venous thromboembolism.

Important Note

This overview is intended for educational and surgical instrument-library purposes. Liposuction should be performed by appropriately qualified surgical professionals in a properly equipped clinical setting. Cannulas and equipment must be selected according to the procedure, manufacturer instructions, and applicable clinical standards.
